Heat stress in poultry causes dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, reduces oxygen availability, and triggers oxidative stress. It disrupts hormonal regulation, increasing stress hormones (corticosterone) which suppress immunity. It also damages gut integrity, promotes inflammation, and increases disease susceptibility. In laying birds, prolonged heat stress can affect calcium metabolism, leading to weaker bones and poorer eggshell quality.
